I think we would all agree that a child brings changes to parent’s lifestyle. There is an immediate shift in priorities and your happiness is dependent on the health and wellbeing of the offspring. Of lately, obesity in children has become a rising concern amongst industry health advocates and parents. In fact, a recent study found that children are likelier to have extra calories post watching advertisements for ‘unhealthy’ food. With such massive exposure and an array of options, how can adults try to bring their children on the healthy track when they find it difficult themselves? We present to you 5 tips on ensuring your child doesn’t trudge along on the path of obesity.
1)Start Early – According to the studies, excessive weight gain during pregnancy can impact your baby’s risk of becoming overweight as a child. Do not overeat or eat unusually high fats in pregnancy.
2) Practise what you preach – Be a role model. If children see parents making healthy choices it will ultimately reflect in their choices as well. You should not expect them to eat healthy if parents are eating unhealthy foods.
3) Eat meals together – According to the study published in the journal of Paediatrics, children who ate with their families are less likely to be overweight. Proteins & vegetables should be a part of all meals. They should have 2-3 servings of fruits daily. Do not encourage them or force them to overeat. Accept if child says that they are full.
4) Do activities together – If you aren’t active, then don’t expect your child to be so. It doesn’t have to be any complicated exercise regimen. Whether it is a playing outside with the other kids or joining a sports club, encourage your child to choose an active lifestyle and limit their time in front of the television.
5) Sleep is important – Make sure that child sleeps for atleast 8 hours a day. It is well known fact that lack of sleep results in weight gain.
